Generic Arizona center facing a Dallas defensive front with Hjalte Froholdt questionable headline

Hjalte Froholdt Questionable vs. Cowboys: Cardinals O-Line and Fantasy Impact

Arizona Cardinals starting center Hjalte Froholdt is questionable for Sunday’s Week 8 road game against the Dallas Cowboys after a knee issue worsened late in the practice week. Froholdt was added as a limited participant Thursday, did not practice Friday and received the questionable designation. The timing matters because Arizona’s listed backup center, Jon Gaines II, is already out with an ankle injury.

The final designation does not mean Froholdt has been ruled out, but the Thursday-to-Friday downgrade creates legitimate concern. Arizona will have to prepare a replacement plan while also giving Froholdt until the pregame inactive deadline to show that his knee can handle a full workload.

Why Froholdt’s status matters

Froholdt is more than a name on the depth chart. The Cardinals signed him to a two-year extension in August after he started all 51 games in his first three seasons with the team. Head coach Mike LaFleur described the center as an extension of the quarterback and play caller because of his command of protections, fronts and the offense’s communication.

That continuity is especially important for Jacoby Brissett, who has completed 183 of 282 passes for 1,600 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions through seven games. Brissett has been sacked 15 times. A late center change can affect the snap exchange, protection calls and how quickly Arizona identifies interior pressure even if the replacement blocks well individually.

Froholdt’s durability also means Arizona has not needed many real-game repetitions from its backup plan. That makes Sunday’s warmups and inactive list more important than the questionable label alone.

Arizona’s replacement plan

The Cardinals’ official depth chart lists Froholdt first at center and Gaines second. Gaines is also listed as the starting right guard, but he has been ruled out after missing all three practices. Arizona’s Friday team report says Hayden Conner would slide from guard to center if Froholdt cannot play, with Josh Fryar and recently signed Kingsley Eguakun available as right-guard options.

That would create two changes instead of one: Conner would move to the middle and another reserve would enter at guard. The Cardinals are already operating without left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. and guard Isaiah Adams, who are on injured reserve. This is therefore a depth and communication test across the interior, not simply a one-for-one substitution.

Conner started at right guard last week when Gaines was unavailable. Moving him again would ask Arizona to rebuild chemistry in the span of one practice week. The Cardinals can protect that group with quicker throws, play-action and fewer long-developing dropbacks, but those adjustments can also compress the offense.

Fantasy impact for Jeremiyah Love, Trey McBride and Jacoby Brissett

Jeremiyah Love is off the injury report after full participation Friday and is expected to return from an ankle injury. He leads Arizona with 245 rushing yards on 67 carries, a 3.7-yard average and one rushing touchdown. Love also has 11 catches for 36 yards and a receiving score.

Froholdt’s uncertainty slightly lowers Love’s rushing-efficiency projection because Arizona may be changing both its center and right guard. It does not erase Love’s volume case. He remains a reasonable flex option in deeper leagues if his return role is confirmed, but managers should avoid treating the cleared injury designation as proof of a full workload. Tyler Allgeier, who has 61 carries for 176 yards, and Bam Knight remain capable of sharing the backfield.

Trey McBride’s fantasy value is safer. He leads the Cardinals with 59 receptions, 472 receiving yards and four touchdowns, and quick throws to the tight end can become even more important behind a reshuffled line. McBride remains a clear fantasy starter. The offensive-line concern affects the offense’s overall ceiling more than his weekly lineup status.

Brissett remains a lower-end streaming option. Dallas has not produced a dominant individual sack total outside Quinnen Williams’ three, but a backup-center configuration can create pressure opportunities that did not exist on paper earlier in the week. The Cowboys D/ST becomes more attractive as a streamer if Froholdt is inactive, especially if Arizona also starts a reserve at right guard.

Week 8 matchup impact

Arizona enters the game 2-5, while Dallas is 3-4. The Cardinals visit AT&T Stadium on Sunday, November 1, at noon Central. Dallas has won its most recent game, but Arizona has won the past four meetings between the teams, so the Cowboys cannot assume an offensive-line injury will decide the matchup by itself.

The clearest Dallas opportunity is to test the new center immediately with interior alignments, simulated pressure and late movement. Arizona’s counter is to keep Brissett on schedule and make the defense tackle Love, McBride and the short passing game. If the Cardinals avoid obvious third-and-long situations, the line shuffle becomes easier to manage.

The strongest counterargument to downgrading Arizona is that Froholdt may still play. Questionable leaves the door open, and a veteran center with 51 consecutive Cardinals starts could stabilize the unit if he is cleared. The analysis changes materially if Froholdt takes normal pregame snaps and is active.

What fantasy managers should watch Sunday

The first checkpoint is Arizona’s inactive list, expected about 90 minutes before the noon Central kickoff. If Froholdt is active, managers should still watch whether he starts and plays every series. If he is inactive, confirm whether Conner is snapping to Brissett and who fills the vacated guard spot.

For fantasy decisions: keep McBride in lineups, treat Love as a flex with workload uncertainty, downgrade Brissett slightly if Froholdt sits, and consider Dallas D/ST a viable streamer only after the offensive-line configuration is confirmed. The injury is most meaningful as a unit-level warning, not a reason to bench every Arizona skill player.

Information cutoff and scoring basis

Factual cutoff: October 31, 2026, at 8:42 a.m. Central. Injury designations and depth chart roles reflect Arizona's final Week 8 report. Player statistics cover the first seven games of the 2026 regular season. Dallas defensive statistics cover the same seven game period.

Fantasy scoring basis: Football Nation uses half PPR as the default. Full PPR awards one point per reception, half PPR awards one half point, and standard scoring awards no reception points. Defense and special teams scoring varies by platform, so managers should check their league settings.

Football Nation opinion: Froholdt's late downgrade is a modest efficiency risk for Arizona, not a reason to bench every Cardinals skill player. Trey McBride remains a clear starter. Jeremiyah Love remains a flex option with workload uncertainty. Jacoby Brissett receives a small downgrade only if Froholdt is inactive and Arizona must change both center and right guard.
